Straczynski + Trek = WRITE!

My letter, prompted by this exciting tidbit:

Dear Paramount:

I recently learned that J. Michael Straczynski, one of the finest voices in current science fiction, has expressed interest in developing an original Star Trek series.

I’m terrible about writing letters. My favorite aunt hasn’t heard from me in six months. But as a long-time fan of Star Trek, I felt compelled to write and tell you how excited I am about even an inkling of a chance that Straczynski might become involved with Trek.

With the exception of Enterprise, I have loved every incarnation of Trek, happily purchasing the DVD sets and introducing the shows to new fans. At the end of the second season of Enterprise, I was left cold. Star Trek had become, well, typical television. Repetetive, over-sexualized (sure, sex is good, but too much of it is the wrong feel for Trek), and predictable. Everything that earlier series were not.

As much of a Trek fan as I am, I must say that I’ve never seen better than Straczynski’s Babylon 5. Though wordy and melodramatic at times, Bab5 was solidly written, well-acted, and elegantly produced. Straczynski is the absolute perfect match for Trek, which
